From Dream to Reality: 6 Steps to Design a Magical Kids’ Bedroom
Learn about the 6 steps to design your kids bedroom changing it into something that they will be going to love and keep in the heart all their life.
It is about conception, sketch, ideas, put into practice.
Transforming a child’s bedroom into a space they’ll love and remember forever is both an art and a journey. In this post, I’m sharing the six key steps I followed to create a dreamy, ocean-inspired room for 5-year-old Rooman—a two-week adventure full of imagination, craftsmanship, and love. I hope this inspires you to take on your own project or reach out for a helping hand when needed.
Step 1 – Meet & Understand
Every design begins with connection. My first visit to Fatima’s home (Rooman’s mom) was all about listening—what are her daughter’s passions, routines, and must-haves? At just 5 years old, Rooman loves it all: ballet, makeup, dolls, unicorns, and, of course, princesses! She needed a space for play, creativity, learning, rest, and a wardrobe section to proudly display her dancing shoes. All that in a 12.5 m² room!
Step 2 – Choose the Theme
A clear theme brings harmony and sparks imagination. Rooman already had a canopy that didn’t quite work in her space—it felt bulky and a bit dull. But when I took it home, ironed it, and saw its soft shimmer of golden stars and mermaids in pink and turquoise tones, a light bulb went off: the ocean, Ariel, mermaids—it was perfect.
With the theme set, the design took shape effortlessly. I created mood boards, presenting it to the family, and received a joyful “yes” to proceed!
Step 3 – Shop & Source
Next came a full day of shopping for accessories, decor, materials, and hardware. I didn’t go with a strict list—I followed my instincts, letting the theme guide me toward pieces that felt “just right.” This step filled the room with character and charm.
Step 4 – Pick the Colors & Paint
With the decor in hand, I finalized the wall palette: soft pink, creamy white, and taupe—tones that calm and uplift. My daughter, Irene, helped paint the room, replacing bold reds and flashy pinks with a gentle, dreamy ambiance.
Step 5 – Create, Build & Customize
This was the longest step—and the most creative!
- I designed and built custom furniture: a dressing unit, a dollhouse-style desk, and a seahorse-shaped support cut with a CNC router.
- The canopy fabric became a flat sheet, pillowcases, a hammock back, and a curtain scarf.
- I remade the top of the canopy, replacing the heavy panels with sheer turquoise and white tulle, adding twinkle lights for a magical glow.
- A blue fluffy blanket and plastic chair became an adorable octopus-shaped footstool!
- The mirror, lamp base, and a treasure box were decorated with shells and sparkling “jewels.”
- I painted drawer facades, swapped knobs for crystal buttons, and gave new life to old furniture pieces.
Everything came together to create a harmonious, custom-designed room with so many personal touches.
Step 6 – Setup Day
Finally, the big reveal! No peeking until every detail was in place. The result? Big smiles, wide eyes, and lots of joy all around—my favorite part of the job
